92 Ranger with a vacuum modulator problem.

I have a 92 and the modulator went bad and was sucking tranny fluid into the intake. I couldn't find a new modulator today anywhere and was wondering what would be the drawback to driving the vehicle with the vacuum line plugged off at both ends so that I don't have a vacuum leak and the modulator is not connected but also not leaking out . If anybody can tell me what happens when you disconnect the module , I would really appreciate it . Thanks Scott.

You will have some nasty shifts and could break a band. Whats wrong with driving aroune with it leaking. Lots of modulators have leaked for a long time, just monitor the fluid levels.

The problem with it was I was kicking out clouds of smoke at stop lights that would make the original James Bond DB7s smoke maker blush and it was giving me a horrible knocking noise, oh and fouling my spark plugs. I took the vehicle for a test dreive with the unit isolated and found that it shifted harder than usuall when accelerating normal but wasn't to bad if I kept my foot out of it . I think that driving long distances with it unhooked could definately bring on more problems. The difference in the motors performance is extreme as I no longer have a transmission fluid injector in my manifold. However , my new Question is this. WHAT COULD HAPPEN TO THE OTHER VACUUM UNIT THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO TRAN FLUID ? Anybody??? Hey thanks for the support guys ,it can be a pain in the butt trying to decipher the quirks in older cars and it helps to have others that may have experienced the same probs.
 






Assume you mean the vacuum tree on the manifold. Hoses and caps tend to fall off once softened by transmission fluid. Suggest some ty-wraps or clamps on those items. A hose you can put back on, but if you lose a cap, it may be hard to get home.
 






Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmission section. You could use Seafoam to clean the vacuum lines. Many local auto parts stores sell modulators. I have 4 extra ones if you have trouble finding one locally. They sell an adjustable, and a non adjustable type.
 






Thanks guys I found one at autozone . Now its just a matter of putting it in . I will check out both methods of r&r and see which is the faster .
