ok, so I have a 92 eddie bauer...took it to Pismo SVRA...took some runs at some dunes, rolled down some dunes...nothin HARDCORE...took it very easy...got back to camp, and the tranny started slipping really bad. So I checked my fluid level, and viola, theres my problem (or so I think)...put a couple quartes of ATF in there (type F) and the problem is solved. Take it out the next day, do the same thing as last time, and again...the tranny starts slipping severly...so I nurse it back to camp, and check the fluid - low again...although I never had visible signs of that much fluid leaking out, apparently it did (somehow)...Go to Kragen, get another 5 quartes of fluid, fill it till it is full again...it shifts, but now all I have is forward gears, no reverse...but it isn't slipping anymore, but obviously something is wrong...drive the 3 hours home, pull it in the garage, pull the pan off, check out the bottom of the pan, looks fine, the linkage is fine and everything...basically, I am in the early stages, pre-disassembly, and just want to know who, if anyone is reading this, has had similar problems...just tryin to do a bit of trouble shooting :(

Are you using OD in your exploits ?

I ask because an overheated trannie will vent fluid out the vent piping.... and if the vent piping is intact often you might not even realize it.... you'd be going slow enough it would not be all over the back window...If you want to milk a few more miles, try adjusting the OD band... it's probably slipping, causing some of the heat.... the tc is going to be generating a lot of heat in that offroad dunes situation too.... and your low speeds will only make it harder to lose excess heat. Those kind of activities really call out for a BIG transmission cooler. It's asking a lot from an aging transmission. How many miles do you have on it?
