I have a 1996 v8 x. I am having some sort of engine problems with it right now. I think its a leaky headgasket. Anyways I have a line on a cheap 1993 ho from a mustang. I would like to throw this in a cheaply as possible then build and stroke my x. Just looking for the least amount of downtime, plus if I have my x block out I can take my time and build it proper.

So basically, what do I have to do to make the 5.0 bolt in, can I just swap the heads? its not obdII so what else? oh yah and can I easily convert to DIS? Not looking to spend any money on throwing this engine in. I have looked for another x 5.0 but no luck (over the course of the last year)

Thanks for any input

With everything you would have to switch over from the engine in your Explorer to the 93 HO you are better off looking for used engine from another Explorer or Mountaineer.

You must retain the DIS, the crank sensor, harmonic balancer, upper & lower intake, front engine dress (water pump, timing cover all brackets) oil pan and the list goes on.

Yup, get a $400 98-01 motor with P heads from a bone yard and build it. Swap your head gaskets out for now and build the "extra" motor. If your concerned about down time, your looking at 1.5-3 days each time you swap the motors depending on your abilities and the amount of help you get. LOTS of little things to disconnect, then reconnect.

ya I've swapped engine in a number of vehicles before, have everything I need in my shop. Would love to find a x 5.0 but none around here that I can find for a decent price. I figured I would have to change too much, to make it worth it. An engine in an x takes me a weekend of beers to re and re
