Hello again. My recent posts indicated CEL fix and new paint job. Last task was the windows --- all four do not operate. Door motors hum but it takes my pushing up and down to move the glass. I went to the shop today and the analisys was --- all four need new motors. Well I have my doubts. Some time ago I remember reading a post that had great pics about repairing these motors with new bushings or some other item. Can someone tell me how to find these pics in the forum or elsewere? Many thanks.
Go to the ford dealer and get the window regulator gear kit for a full size truck, 88-90 f150 or bronco. I have broncos, i used them. This will work for the front windows. Remove the motors and take them apart. Save the explorer gears, clean them and use the 3 plastic bushings from the kits. Do not use the white gear. You can use the steel gear but its not necessary. You do not even have to remove the regulator from the Explorer. The glass will stay in the upright position.
The backs are more difficult but not bad, There will be a dimple in the inside door steel. You have to drill a hole to access one of the motor bolts. Clamp the window so it does not fall, it should stay from friction. I have not tried the bushing trick with the rears. It might work, let us know what you find.
The gear kits are about $25 each. I got a regulator and motor off ebay used for about $35 each for the back doors. New they are much more expensive about $300 for the regulator, $90 for the motor. You will have to grind some rivets if you decide to replace the rear regulators.
It's about 8-9 dollars per motor to buy the bushings. I know for the front windows you'll either need bolts/nuts for re installation or a way to "re-rivet" them into place. Your call.
BJ, I am very grateful to you for providing these links, and to those who took the time to take pics, etc.. Also to other members whose links are referenced. The job will be a pleasure to some degree now. Again my thanks.
Thanks for this post. All four window motors went out on my 93 explorer several years ago. Same situation, I can hear the motor turning but the window doesn't go. I've just been pushing/pulling the windows up and down.
Even with windows pushing right down, those dang kids broke the "vent" glass to get in and take the stereo. After they unsuccessfully tried to bore out all the locks that is.
just did mine. Like an idiot i bought the bushings off ebay and when i went to install them they did not fit. I took my motor (apart) to ace hardware and bought ball bearings that fit and it now works like a charm. Just an alternative in case you have a problem with the bushings like i did.
UH-OH. I just bought bushings from eBay. The seller has a 100% rating so I think I'll be OK. But to CMA, please give me the size or number of the bearings you bought. It's very interesting to see that a ball bearing can sub for a disk.
Junk yard. I took a dewalt battery with me and hot wired the window motors to make sure that they worked right. Cost me 4 bucks a pop. And I know that they all work wonderfully. Thats me. The dork with no money
Just thought I'd post to let you know that my door motors are all humming along with windows behaving as they should. I struggled with the driver door and gave up the job when I found a hungry mechanic who did all four doors for $160. Best money I ever spent. Thanks to all who helped me with their posts.
