I have a '93 EB Explorer with 160,000 miles.
The tranny is starting to act up by not wanting to shift into overdrive at highway speed. I know that the fluid needs changing and will be doing that soon as well as adding a bigger tranny cooler.
Any other ideas as to what may be wrong?
Based on what I have heard about Explorer trannies I figure that this one will need rebuilding before long. My question is this....
I am a mechanical engineer and have about 15 car engine rebuilds under my belt as well as several rear ends and a manual tranny. I have never been into an auto tranny before but what odds would everyone place on an average to above average do-it-yourself person rebuilding an auto tranny?

I just had my 92's tranny rebuilt. I got to watch the guys do it from start to finish. I sure am glad that I had them do it! I've got about 10 engine rebuilds under my belt, BUT the tranny is a completely differant animal!

Don't waste your time trying to rebuild your tranny. If you have never done one, the A4LD is NOT the place to start. I have a buddy of mine that works at AAMCO and he said that the explorer trannies are a *****!

I haven't rebuilt the A4LD, but I've done several C6s and C4s. They were a piece of cake. I have redone the valvebody in my A4LD, and that was more of a pain than a shift kit for a C6 or C4! If that is any indication, you would probably be better off having it done, unless you have a really clear manual and a lot of time and patience.
