I was headed to the side of the interstate with the temp gauge pegged and blowing steam when my '94 2.3L SOHC Ranger lost power.

Had it towed home.

Replaced water pump and for good measure the thermostat.

Filled it with water as a trial to check for temp control and leaks.

Won't start.

Fuel pump runs.

Exhaust pipe smells of fuel.

Is there some typical electrical problem that occurs after a messy overheat?

Fuel Pump and PCM Power relays are almost new.

Thanks!

Update - Have plenty of spark...

and timing seems OK but...

Compression is pretty bad. Cyl 1-4::60 53 30 125

Will add oil just before repeating compression check to try to get a sense of whether the piston rings are at fault.

Looks like I'm about to get very familiar with this great little 205,000 mi engine.

Thoughts?

Update: Wet Compression (10 ml 10W-30 motor oil in each cyl before test)Cyl 1-4:: 80-90 90-90 90-60 210-210 - (Note: Second number is addl compression test w/o new oil about 10 min later).

Update:
The head is off.

The head gasket came off with the head and there are *no* obvious blowby cuts between the cylinders.

Seems this issue is going to be resolved by valves & rings.

Anybody have a suggestion other than rebuilding this engine or installing a different rebuilt engine?

So...

I'm looking for an good engine rebuilder in the Charlotte-Greensboro, NC corridor.
