94 4x4 Rear Diff noise

Posted on Gen Expl, but got no response, so here goes again.
Rear diffy roars somewhat when NOT in O/D, and goes away when I shift into O/D. Anyone else seen this?

94 E. Bauer, 4.0, Auto, 4WD, with "Manual O/D",
