94 EX: Always 20 seconds of fast idle upon starting then....

My 94 EX (166K mi) always has about twenty seconds of fast idle upon starting cold or hot here in Florida. Then, after the twenty or so seconds fast idle, over a period of about five seconds it slows down to a nice idle speed for engaging the automatic transmission. I mention Florida to exclude really cold starting as in the northern states and, although this isn't really a serious problem, it is bothersome and annoying to always wait out the idle-down period before engaging the auto trans. I just don't like to pull it into drive at the higher idle speeds with the lurch and stress to the trans. Again, it's the same upon all starting, hot or cold. Also, faster or slower, the idle performance is very, very smooth and I'm pleased with that aspect.

Have you ever cleaned the idle air bypass? They get gummed up. It doesn't take very lone, q-tips and some brake cleaner or alcohol. Seems to me I remember someone saying that carb cleaner will bugger up the seals in it.

Thanks, wood1. I'd like to do that. Would you kindly post some details on how to do this. I've searched this forum and checked my Haines Repair Manual and struck out on this.

The idle air bypass is attached to the throttle body. Is it a cylindrical device with an electric connection mounted on an angle.

Unplug it, remove the two small bolts and you will see it has two holes in the back. Get in them both with the q-tips and clean it out as best as you can. Bolt it back on, reuse the gasket. I have never torn one of these gaskets so don't worry about that.
