i have a 94 explorer the engine was swapped out for another one i guess around 120k miles dont ask why this was a few months before i bought it. i been seeing the belt tensoner on the top center of the engine by the alternator on the 1st gen but my explorer which is a 94 the belt tensioner is below the alternator when did they put them on the button of the alt its a pain to do it from there. so im wonder if i have the newer engine from a explorer.

yea those are a pain. mine broke last winter and I had to change it. Toughest part is gettin a wrench or socket on it to loosen the tension. You usually need two people. One person under the truck and one person to slip the belt on the pulleys.

Not fun when its -10 out and ice underneath your truck. but with no water pump, it wouldn't last long til it heated up. Dayco has an improved tensioner that i'm running. Thicker metal so it won't crack.

Below alternator on my 11/94 stickered 1994 ex.

Use a 3/8 inch drive socket wrench with no socket, just the square end in the hole. Worked great for me.

yup pretty bad when you have to get your mom to slide on the belt to the last pulley while your under the truck holding that wrench and tryin to slide on the belt too
