My 94 Explorer's A4LD wont engage in any selection, forward or reverse. I've cheked fluid level & condition, downshift cable & modulator hose, connected to line pressure port & got 60 psi at idle in all fwd ranges, 70 psi in reverse ( again, at idle). Temporarily unplugging the modulator hose sends the pressure to 150+psi. Now, I've got the pan off ( looks pretty clean on the bottom), and the valve body out. I'm going to disassemble, clean & reinstall it as a last attempt before pulling the entire trans out. gasket prints look good on the valve body, doesnt look dirty... I really need some troubleshooting help, what is left that would cause a complete no-go? Thanks all for your help.

Do the RPM's drop when you shift to R or D?

I only detect the slightest drop in RPM when I shift into any forward or reverse selection. I also raised the rear wheels off the ground, they don't even try to turn, but they do spin by hand.

Thanks in advance for any more troubleshooting help anyone can give me!

Any idea what happened? Mine just quite in the same manner as yours this evening. I need some ideas as to what happened.

Call me negative, but it sounds like typical A4LD problems to me... in need of rebuild.

Absolute sudden no go with clean pan and fluid sounds like it coud be the tranni pump or something sticking in the valve body to me.
Good luck,

Peace.

I unscrewed the top trans line going into the radiator and put a plastic bag over the end. My son then started the beast and the fluid pumped out of the line like a pressure washer. Seems the pump is still good. Fluid is a dark, red chocolate color. Is she burned up scotty??? Did she give me all she had??

Anyone have any ideas on this abrupt non-working trans??

If it is really dark and smells burnt, your tranni is probabaly in need of a rebuild. :thumbdwn:
Good luck.

Ditto on falls guy's response. Your tranny fluid should not be at all like a chocolate color. Bright red is more of a norm. Good luck on a rebuild. :(

either a torque converter went bad or the forward low servo is sticking, try replacing the modulator i've found that a new modulator will put the vacuum pressure to good use and unfreeze sticking vlaves and servos, definately look into getting a rebuild that tranny will last another 100k miles

My 94 ford explorer sport will not crank. For some reason the truck would not start from the ignition so we tried starting it by the starter soleniod on the fenderwall. That worked for awhile. Now the truck will not start from the starter soleniod on the fenderwall. It will try to turn over but it will not crank properly. What could be the problem? Please help!

Get your own thread!
Try replacing the Solenoid, Had to do that on Mustang before and that worked. Also Check your Battery Voltage while your cranking and before. And check your starter by taking it to Napa if nothing else works

Well, I disassembled the trans, what I found was a BROKEN center shaft. The forward clutch hub was also broken, and the inside of the center support is scored up real bad. Everything else was ok, except for the OD sun gear adaptor being kind of chewed up and bowed like hell. This turned out to also be a hybrid transmission, with a 5R center support, 4R bellhousing, #3 and #4 bearings, and a plastic #1.

I have a slightly different user name now, because I couldnt communicate with anyone here and couldnt get any messages thru to the administrators.

I think that someone was doing burn-outs or something when that center shaft broke, although, it's wimpy as is.

I welcome more comments..!!! Evil Jeff
