Last week automatic trans did not want to shift from 2nd to 3rd. RPM would go up to 3000 and still at times not want to shift up. Now today when I went to put it in any gear the engine cuts out immediately !! Any ideas what is wrong ?

Welcome to this forum! It sounds like several things might be wrong. How many miles do you have? The engine cutting out when put into gear might be a failing torque converter, TCC solenoid, or a valve body issue. The shifting issue could be related to the valve body, modulator, clogged filter, misadjusted bands or kickdown cable. A high mileage transmission would have worn internal parts like seals, clutch plate frictions, steel plates, and bands,

The vehicle has 84,000 miles. Has not had any previous trans work done, the fluid looks dark so I was going to start with filter and oil.
