1996 Ford Explorer 2wd with Auto Trans (4R55E)
When accelerating slowly from a stop, the trans will shift from 1st to 2nd but the shift is harsh. If you accelerate quickly, the trans will not shift from 1st to 2nd unless you get off the throttle and then back on again. This produces a harsh shift as well.
Recently the trans has begun to not shift into overdrive and slips out of gear altogether if you try an engage it. It is then necessary to allow the rpms to decrease quite a bit before it will engage 4ht gear.
The fluid has been changed regularly with the only other trans related issue being a cracked flexplate at about 100,000 miles. The truck now has 143,000.
The check engine light is on and the O/D light flashes. I had the codes pulled which said that the “Shift Solenoid B” was not functioning properly. I replaced it with no change to the shifting. I have checked or changed the throttle position sensor, vehicle speed sensor, and the automatic trans control module. None of this had any effect on the problem.
I came across a TSB from Ford that notes this problem with the same trouble codes. According to this TSB that is attached, it could be bad Intermediate and/or Overdrive Servos. Other than this my only guess is a bad Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid.
Any help is appreciated.
