'94 Ford Explorer Limited Edition (late 94 with ECC-IV, but lots of things following more like a '95 in the repair books than a '94).
Over the last year, it would turn over, but not crank/run. Many times I would let it sit for a few minutes and then it would start/run fine. Last month it actually died a couple of times while driving down the road. I would coast off the side of the road, wait a couple minutes and it would start/run again.
Now on very few ocassions it will crank for 5-10 minutes and run, but will die after that and not start/run again. Normally it will not start/run at all. Just to clarify the first question always asked, the starter DOES turn over the engine when this happens, just the engine doesn't crank/run.
Computer check gives several different codes, but mainly centers around Secondary Fuel Circuit failure (rare, but a couple times) and PIP.
I've checked the fuel pump and pressure on the rail and its all within spec according to the maintenance manual. All six cyclinders have spark, and I even replaced all my spark plugs and wires to be sure.
I've checked all the vacuum lines and replaced several faulty connections on the octopus that were loose and not getting a good connection.
So last resort I took it into a friend's show who ran a diagnostics test on it and can't find what the problem is. They were able to test the fuel injectors and found out its not getting a signal from the computer. They have recommended to replace the Crank Shaft Position Sensor and a couple others. The sensors can be had for around $25/each according to them and after replacing they can only think of replacing the computer itself as well.
According to the shop, they have ran the full diagnostics according to the repair manual and there isn't anything else lef to test to pinpoint the problem. Does anyone know of any additional diagnostics or advise on what else to do besides just starting replacing parts until the problem is resolved?
