Hi all... 1994 ford explorer 4 liter engine, 4wd
4 days ago my 94 ford explorer had a no start episode.
went to bagel shop in early morning.. 5 minute ride.. got bagels and came out to start up my car and NO Start...
the engine spun fast so I know that the battery is good. I tried it 6-8 times and it just spun.... I opened up the hook to look around and 5 minutes later I got back in car and it started right up...

2 days ago it happened again. this time right in my driveway. I used the car early in the morning and it sat for about 2 hours. I went to start and the same exact thing happened!!!!! I spun over the motor about 6-8 times... then I let it sit for 3-4 minutes and tried again and it started right up...

any ideas ?? coil,, icm, ???? ???????

thanks
Mike

Have you tried turning the key to "on", waiting 5 seconds patiently, then trying to start? If it works then, you don't have any problems and you just need to give the fuel pump time to pressurize the system.

It could alse be a dying fuel pump relay.

I almost always wait that couple of seconds until I hear the fuel pump stop.... I don't think it was that... someone mentioned that it may be a dirty fuel filter ??

thankss

If you always hear the fuel pump pressurize then it could be a clogged fuel filter or a stuck fuel pressure regulator. The fuel filter is a routine maintenance item anyway.

Oh,,, ok... I will have that fuel filter changed right away as a step in the right direction.. thanks..

I had this problem about 9 years ago on a plymoth voyager(pile of ****).

long story short........ the dealership said it was a bad computer, put a new one in and did the same thing come to find out it was a fusable link

paid 300 damn dollars for nothing

this also happened to me and the fuel pump relays seemed to be the problem

In addition to fuel pump/pump relay/regulator, I have seen this very same symptom from a crankshaft position sensor, too. Turns over but won't fire, five minutes later it starts right up and runs fine.

The crankshaft sensor on your early-model Ex will be held on by two bolts and have a plug-on wiring connector. It'll be on the front passenger side of the engine by the crankshaft harmonic balancer. (It has a long pointer on it facing forward.) For $30 bucks or so for the part from Advance Auto or Autozone for a 4.0 OHV, it might be worth replacing as a maintenance item if you have a lot of miles.

Sometimes with an intermittent problem, you have to wait until it finally dies completely to find the problem. Hopefully it won't come to that for you. Good luck.

might be the iac

I had this problem after sitting for awhile. I'd try to start up and it wouldn't turn over. However after about 2-3 minutes of cranking it would turnover. I had this problem about once a month, until it progressed to being an every day prob

turned out that I needed to replace the iac which costs $88 and an extra $60 for labor
