94 Limited
This is the first time I've posted, but have been reading through the forusm for the last couple weeks... I love this site...

I have a '94 Limited, 140K miles, in pretty good conidtion (biggest complaint is that the first owner took pretty rotten care of the leather on the front two seats). Intend to keep my baby for another 140K.

Last few months, the compass/temp display has been acting up, flickering bright and dim (as if it couldn't decide if I had my lights on) both during the day and at night, and then sometimes going all bright and lighting up all of the LEDs. Usually, the problem would only last for a few minutes when I started up my X, and would settle down after blanking out a few times (everyone who rode with me would always feel the need to tap on the damn thing, which of course never did a bit of good to a bunch of solid state electronics :nono: ). The problem kept getting worse, lately it would just state lit up constantly or just stay blanked out (usually the latter).

I took apart the console today and metered out what I could--the map lights work fine (and I figured out what is the ground, 12V steady and 12V switched for the courtesy lights lines are), and with the key in the ignition, the wiring harness is recieving 12V of power to an additional wire. Since I have a 94 Limited, on the console itself, all of the wiring is black (good move Ford!), and I am sort of guessing on what the stuff on the X side is for exactly since I don't have anything to match up the colors with, or what the voltages should be.

So my question is if anyone--either first or second gen--have had this sort of problem and figured out what it was. I guess it could come down to a short in wiring somewhere, a bad temp sensor (unlikely, I'd say, considering the behavior of the LED panel), or a bad panel. Again, thanks for you help!

And I love this site... off to surf some more....

Also know the temp wires...

ALso forgot to say I traced out the wires down to the temp gauge in front of the radiator, so I know which two those are...

So I guess the question is, what sort of voltage should I see on wire to the dimmer switch (vs ground?) and which one is it (as opposed to the speed control).

Guess I also need to be on the lookout for a new compass unit--the temp I can live without, but I miss knowing which direction I'm headed!
