94 motor noise.

94 explorer 4.0 5 speed.
when the motor is under a load or just going up a big hill the truck sounds
like it is going to come apart. done the bg treatment and the fuel additives.
it will sound bad going up the hill and when i turn around and go up the other
side it may not do any talking at all. no codes in the system and all emissions
are working well.
does this truck have a octane bar in it.

Is it pinging? this engine has a nasty habit of developing a ping. This has been discussed at great length here several times. Usually a result of running slightly lean due to a dirty MAF or a a vacuum leak trhough loose lower intake manifold bolts. Other possible causes, too.

Well, nothing I did fully removed the pinging or lugging up those steep hills until I cleaned things up while replacing the head gasket last year. Prior, cleaning the MAF did the most good, but not as well as this:

After a year, I still have a slight ping under heavy load, but nothing like it was, and power remains good, i.e. no lugging uphill (just wish the computer would down-shift the auto sooner).
