I've done a little bit of digging, but I'm a bit confused on how to recalibrate my speedometer.

I had 3.27's and I went to 3.73's. Can I , or do I , Just go to the junkyard and pull a speedo gear off a explorer / ranger that had 3.73's? I'm not sure If i understand why some would have a different number of teeth..etc. I haven't pulled mine out yet, but I'd just assume that if it comes out of a 3.73 geared truck.. it should work? Does it matter if it is out of 4x4 4x2? (mine is 4x4, gear in transfer case)

Thanks!

Assuming the trans in the doner ranger has the same gear ratio's (I don't know if multiple ratio options were availible) that would probably work. A 3.73 ranger would have a different speedo gear from a 3.27 ranger because the transmission output would have to turn faster on the 3.73 ranger to reach a given speed. The different speedo gear allows the speedometer to display the same road speed in different equipped vehicles.

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Speedogear.html is a very handy guide, especially for the part numbers. I just bought a new speedo gear for my explorer and Ford wanted to charge me for the whole bit that goes into the transfercase (80 bucks) I provided the part number and bought a 10 dollar gear instead :P

Fantastic. Thanks for the help!
