My 94 1st edition Explorer with electric shift was not shifting into 4x4 but dash lights were on symptoms.
Followed all the posted repair suggestions to no avail. FINALLY found the transfer case shift position sensor was faulty, in that the ceramic disc supporting the circuit board had separated from the output shaft. What drew me to open the sealed sensor case was a rattling sound when shaken because there should be no loose parts in the device. The repair was to align the parts, and recement with 3 drops of good adhesive (I used E6000) and let cure. Resealed the sensor housing and assembled everything and now works as it should.
