95 Exp, can't find the MAS

Hi everyone. I need some help. I have a 95 Explorer, V6. The 8th digit of the VIN# is an X. I read on here that cleaning the MAS usually always makes them run better. I can't find mine. I looked all over the intake and found the TPS and IAC valve, which by the way I pulled on and it came apart and the stuff inside that kinda looks like part of a cotton ball fell out. I put it back together but the stuff was all black. Can you replace it with anything or just clean it? Could the MAS be in the air filter housing. Mine has some wires going into it through a rubber grommet. I took the filter out and looked up in there but nothing looked like the pics of a MAS that I saw on here. This site is great and has bailed me out of a few jams already. Thanks

It is inside the filter box. You will need to pull it out, and hold open the tabs holding the inner and outer covers together to get inside where the MAF sensor is. There is a wire harness plugging into the cover where your air filter is- that cover plugs into the MAF

Yup, thats where it is. Its a royal PITA, not hard, just time consuming to get the SOB out and back in... I ditched it and went with a cone filter... You can buy a nice MAF adapteron ebay for 6.99, so fairly cheap...

Yeah..its not to bad to get out just watch you don't stretch the wires though.

Thanks for the help. That little black filter thing on the IAS, could I just replace it with a short piece of hose and an inline gas filter? Does it just filter the air going in or is there more to it that I don't know?
