'95 Explorer engine swap

I have a '95 ford explorer V6 4x4 with a bad motor. I am looking to swap motors. Would like to know what years this can be done with or if there are any suggestions on other motors that it can be done with without to much extra hassle.

If possable an engine with more power but not the need to upgrade other major parts like the tranny.

I am familer with working on vehicles but this is the biggest project I have done yet so I apologize for any ignorance i might have but I am also doing this to learn. Thanks for any suggestions or advice. It is all welcome.

Do some searching on this site. There are plenty of accounts of engine swaps. If you're wanting to stick with just changing the tranny, you're only option will be a v6. That tranny just isn't meant to be behind a v8. Try to find an early second gen motor (95-96), so that the least amount of work is needed. In 97, they modified the fuel system. Other than that, search away, and the best of luck!
