Transfer case engages and does not make any noise or seem to have any problems when no wheel slippage is occuring. When the slightest hint of wheel slippage occurs, loud clanking noises come from underneath the vehicle. Took it to Ford and the want $2000 for a new transfer case installed. Parts total 1600. Does this seem excessive or is this what they cost and has anyone had any experience in putting them in theirselves. If so, how involved it is and should I attempt it with minimal mechanic experience. Also, does anyone have any sources for a less expensive transfer case, i.e. rebuilt or aftermarket that would be a O.E. replacement.

Thanks, Taylor

What exactly did they say was wrong with it? I gather you only hear this noise when you have the truck in Auto? Do you hear it if you have it in auto, and from a stop accelerate rapidly (flooring it) on dry pavement?

Samething both my transfer cases did when they went out. It got so bad in my 97 that I would slip under acceleration in 2wd. 2k is rediculous, do yourself a favor and swap in a 1354 manual t-case from a ranger. You can pick up a used one for less than 400 dollars. If you want to stick with the same t-case you can get a 4405 for about the same price if not less. check out car-part.com for used parts. Also search here on the board there is alot of info.
