I am unable to shift into 4 wheel drive. I pulled the transfer case ( I am also replacing the transmission) and tried to manually turn the shift lever using a pair of vice grips. I can not get the thing to shift into high or low. Will I feel it click or lock into 4wd? The shaft turns really easy and than it feel like a spring when you tighten it up, it wants to spring back. Any advice would be welcome!
Thanks!~

You won't feel anything because that shift rod does not put the case into four wheel drive. That rod is what changes from high to neutral to low range. I think the four wheel lockup is controlled by an electromagnetic clutch.

I recommend you stop ganking on it with pliers before you bust the internals. There is a very small hardened pin on the opposite end of that rod. It is brittle and precaution should be taken to avoiod snapping it off.

If you must shift ranges on the workbench, your fingers should be adequate, along with some jiggling of the input shaft.

Thanks

Thanks guys. I was worried that maybe the Tcase was bad as I was unable to shift into 4wheel drive.
