I have had my 95 Exp XLT for 6 yrs (108000 kms to 197000 kms) and rarely use 4wd. I have noticed that whenever I do switch to 4wd there is a slight vibration on dry pavement like it is definitely fully engaged at all times in 4wd (hi) I think it is supposed to be "smart" and only engage if wheels are slipping. How to trbleshoot?I see there is a gsmo on the r front axle with what seem to be vacuum hoses and wires going to it. What is that? something to do with this?

For the minute try to get it out of 4wd by turning it on and off and drive 10 feet or so.

You have a '95 truck, and when I say truck, I mean it's built like one. An all wheel drive car is different than a 4x4 truck. When my friend got his awd explorer stuck with one wheel spinning in his friends yard I pulled him out easily, because all four of my 4x4 wheels were working at once on my EXPLORER 4x4. Whith that said I believe your transfer case is stuck in 4wd mode.

It's real bad to drive on dry pavement In 4wd. There is a solonoid going in to the transfer case that controls this and it goes bad sometimes. Other times The trouble is in the wheel hubs. Bouth are common problems with any 4x4. You are supposed to use the 4wd once in a while to keep it from seasing up, especially on older ones. This is so common of a problem that I think you may want to look at the vast history of other forums here as I cannot provide as much information in one sitting.

The botom line the 4wd has a tendancy to cease-up or stick if you don't use it once in a while.

If you hit a dead end, aren't afraid to get greesy, and have some off time then I wll be happy to help.

Actually the only way all four of your wheels have power is if your locked front and rear.

OK, first Never drive in 4x4 on dry or wet pavement. 4x4 should only be used on loose dirt, loose rock (gravel), mud, snow, or ice.

2nd, you will have a small percent of power to the front wheels in 4x4 hi. When your ABS detects wheel spin, the power will start to transfer to the fronts in increments, until the wheel spin stops, or they are all moving at the same rate.

3rd, the "gizmo" you are referring to is the front vacuum disconnect. it simply a device that allows power to transfer to the front wheels, it is operated by a vacuum source. It should have a little play on the round part, it will move forward and back slightly, that is normal.
