Hey all. I just picked up my 95EB x and now i want to diagnose a problem i knew it had when i bought it (why i got it so cheap). On the highway only, when the torque converter locks up, i will feel a shudder, like it gets stuck between locking and not being locked. If i hit the accelerator a little, but not so much to down shift a gear, it will unlock and stop. Also if i ease up on the accelerator pedal and allow it to lock up, it will stop. Driving city it is nice, shifts great and on time. Full pedal acceleration is good and strong. It's just this shudder at highway speeds. It's kinda annoying, with the cruise control on and the road starts to go up hill, it will do this as the tranny unlocks the converter. What it sounds and feels like is exactly like what the "wake up strips" on the side of the highway feel and sound like, just at a lesser frequency. I think it may be just a valve or something. hopefully external. I am not getting a CEL light and the O/D isn't flashing, everything runs perfect. I hope someone can gimme some insight as to what this may be. Like i said, i knew about this problem when i got my X, so i got the extra cash in the loan to get it fixed. I love my new X!!

Do you know if you have the 4R55 or the A4LD? I am going to suggest that a good chance is the TCC solenoid is needing some attention. The good news is that this concern can probably be addressed with the trannie in the car (unless it is something wrong inside the TC) Find out what you have. Also, this is an instance where a flush of fluid with the proper type replacement may help. In addition, while I rarely subscribe to "additives" (I consider them "mouse milk as Smokey Yunick used to call em) a trans shop can sell you a product called Lube Gard that may help as well. Let's start with the trans type.

How is the idle on your X? Is it pretty steady, or does it sometimes idle high or low or just plain freak out on you?

idle is fine. i am pretty sure i have the 4r55e tranny i beleive. its a 4.0OHV, 95. So i am pretty sure its the 4r55. it resently had the tranny flushed before i bought it, the fluid still looks like new. Everything in the truck runs fine and like i said, street driving is fine. its only when i reach speeds of around 45-50MPH + it will start to do this when the converter locks up. i bought the car from a good friend that sells used cars and owns a garage, he put an additive in like you mentioned, but i am not sure it is the exact one. he is a saab speacialist and he said that additive is what saab recomends putting in all their trannies. thank you for the help, please reply back! while i think of it let me go run and get my trany code off the door. under the trans label it says "T" if any help, my VIN# is 1fmdu34x1sua89020
thanks again!

i have searched for the past hour on this site and havent been able to find the tranny code listings. so how about someone please post them? My code is a T. i am trying to find what the T means everywhere! I have only found that its a 5 speed auto, not the specific type (IE: a4ld, 4r55e, etc) i want to look up parts to replace my TCC solenoid so i can maybe order them. anyone know this info or where it can be found?

Sean, your code T (1995) is a 4R55E transmission. It's a 4 speed. The fifth gear you feel must be the TC locking up.....??? Ford has had a problem with TC shudder in other transmissions, but not so much in our Explorers. One cure for it is to change the fluid. It seems that the fluid shears over time, and loses some of it's anti-friction qualities, causing the shudder. Since you've already flushed it, I don't know.....???

When it was flushed, was Mercon V fluid put back in?

If when you pull the pan there are 2 solenoids, you have an A4LD, if there's more, you have the 4R55. (an easy way to tell since you are gonna be in there anyway)

it was flushed before i purchased the truck, i dont know what was put in it for fluid. i bought a haynes manual and confirmed the 4r55e tranny. i think i will purchase a service cd from ebay and go up to my friends shop. i will also ask him if he can have his tranny bud come in and look at it.

I'm having this same problem with my 98 5.0 in 3rd gear after the TC locks up but not in OD.
