Had a full rebuild done 3 weeks ago. Band on 2nd gear needed replacing. Prior to the rebuild, for several winters now, on cold days here in the Northeast it took quite a bit of time for the engine torque converter to kick in and shift normally. It would not shift properly from 3rd to 4th until thoroughly warmed up, once warm it shifted properly. Tach stays at about 2200 rpm at 40 mph, when warm at 40 it's at 1500.
Here is the problem, after the rebuild it still takes forever to shift, sometimes does not shift until the temp gauge is in the middle. Mechanic says it relies on engine temp sensor to tell the computer it is warm so it will then shift.
Not the temp sending unit, but the temp sensor. Both temp sensor, temp sending unit, and thermostat changed 2 years ago with after market parts.
Mechanic said I should change temp sensor again, but only use genuine Ford part, it makes a difference(?). Then he says if that does not work it could be bad drivers in the computer. Personally I think the guy is full of S$$t.
He also put a shift kit in it and the damn thing bangs from 2nd to 1st, as soon as I picked up the truck it was doing this. It sounds like somebody tapping with a hammer. He said to put 500 miles on it to see if it improves, it has not. He said to bring it in on Feb 12, and he will shorten some spring in the kit. I told him if that don't work take the damn thing out, the car sounds like a clunker. I think I got hosed with this rebuild and he doesn't know what he's doing,he says can be this can be that and so forth. My contention is if you do the job correctly all should work before you give back to the customer. He claims the need to warm the engine up to shift correctly is a Ford safety feature, I say nonsense, I never had this with any other car I owned, I may be wrong.
Can those with 95 XLT's please advise if their trucks need to be warm before shifting correctly. Also any comments on this shift kit he installed are appreciated.
