? I bought the truck at 118,000 and I don't know if it has had trans fluid ever changed it says 30,000 in the manual so assuming its never been changed am I at the point of no return where I will likely damage the transmission. No problems I just like to take care of my vehicle.

This is the age old question.. Debated here and many other sites with a high mileage vehicle... Is the fluid full? Clean? Does it smell clean and not burnt? If your set on changing it most people would tell you to just drop the trans pan and replace what's in there.. With a new gasket and filter of course...

If it was the motor oil that had never been changed, would you just say "well, no reason to change it now?"

It does look clean and it is full and doesn't smell burn't. I think I'm gonna change it i'm pretty dead set. Hahaha lobo that cracks me up. Alright thanks guys.

I would also drain and replace the fluid in the converter as well. It's the same age. I've never had a problem doing both.

...like you can remove the converter just like that and "drain it". It doesnt even have a plug. The TC is inside the bellhousing...inaccessible from the exterior.

I'd change fluid and filter by dropping the pan, after that I'd do the next 2 better 3 changes in small intervals. Last time change filter again and go back to normal intervals. A flush would be good as well, but should only be done by 2 experienced people if no special equipment is available. There is a risk that the pump runs dry and will be damaged.

Awesome answer :)

My apologies. I didn't know there wasn't a drain plug on that torque converter. The 94 4.0 I had was a 5 speed, and all the other Fords I've had had drain plugs, including my 97 5.0 Ex.
