Having a no start issue with my 96 4.0 . Intermittently it will roll over fire twice and die. After that your damn lucky to get it to start again.

Again this is only intermittent, but it is happening more frequently now.

The last time i got it to start after it was acting up i held my foot on the accelerator at 3 grand. It would fluctuate from 1.5 to 3. anything under that and i would have to feather the throttle like crazy to get it to stay alive.

  • Usually happens when its hot
  • Will fire twice, the starter will kick out but the engine will not stay running
  • if you wait at least 3 hours and try again it might start fine
  • 24 hrs and it starts fine
  • if you do get it started after an episode it acts like it has a dead cylinder ( this some times goes away and other times it runs like crap until the next time it is started

Im also getting codes P1451(Vent control circuit), and P0401(EGR Insufficent Flow)
I have a leak in my gas tank that i think might be causing at least one of these codes but i wouldn't think that they would cause "no start" and rough idle

Parts that I have changed
  • Coil Pack
  • Spark Plugs
  • Spark Plug wires

I also cleaned the Mas air flow and IACV with no change to it running rough.

The shop's solution to it not running or starting was a 97 dollar charge to tell me they didn't know what the problem was. So they cleaned my MAF sensor to make it feel like they tried. They did however say it wasn't that dirty and said if it still had problems and I brought it back their next step would be to change the fuel injectors.

Im at a loss. And if i wanted to go the guess and replace everything method i can do that myself.

Does anyone have any ideas, anyone had this issue?

That's almost certainly a fuel delivery problem.
I'd check the fuel pressure; sounds like a bad
fuel pump. Might be a good idea to also change
the fuel filter.

You would have to check your fuel pressure before anything else. Then go from there. That's also something that garage should of done for that price. I wouldn't trust that garage.

I should have mentioned i did a pressure test on the fuel rail and came up with 30 PSi, the Haynes manual calls for anything from 35 to 45

If i prime the pump (3 to 5 key cycles) i get 35 psi but it immediately drops back to 30 on start up and maintains 30psi under all load conditions

I should mention that priming the pump will give me 2 outcomes, either it will start normally or it will act like its flooded and smell like gas

I also replaced the fuel filter 2yrs ago

I'm almost wondering if my vacuum leak may be messing with the fuel pressure regulator.

I would guess your fuel pump is bad
