My sister-in-law has a 2000 explorer sport with the 4L OHV that has a cracked block. She'll sell it real cheap, so I figure I might as well try to swap in another motor. I found a 96 4L OHV locally that is only $100 that "ran good when pulled" and supposedly has 130K on it. Even if I spent a decent amount rebuilding it, it still won't be terribly expensive. I just can't find definitive info that the 96 block will bolt into a 2000.

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=353305&highlight=1996+2000+ohv This thread says it will, but I saw another thread(can't find the link right now) that says it wont due to the motor mounts.

Can anyone confirm if it will work, and if it is as easy as swapping the accessories/sensors from the 00 to the 96?

I'm saw that same thread. I was thinking it stated 1994 and down blocks had different mounts or no bosses drilled for the newer (1995 up) mounts, but I'll look for it too.

if you stick with a 95 and up, your safe. i believe the blocks changed when they went to a torsion bar suspension. thats where you have the differences in mounts. you can even use a block from a 98 and up ranger. i just swapped a motor from a 96 ex into a 99 ranger. granted you will need to change some stuff, but you can do that when you have both motors pulled, and on the ground. all the sensors will be different, and it will also depend on if its a internal or external egr. if the egr systems are different, you will need to change the drivers exhaust manifold, and the upper intake. you will also need to change the fuel rail, and possibly the injectors, but you can leave the lower intake alone. thats what i have seen so far in all the motor pulls i have done. in total, if you had to swap everything over, and you have both motors sitting beside each other, it may take a hour to change everything over.

The head design is different, so you have to use the manifolds that match your heads. The 96 engine will drop in and everything will bolt up though. just be sure your EGR setup matches or you will need to port you exhaus manifold before you swap it

Thanks for the info. Sounds like whatever year the new motor is, as long as I use the manifolds from that motor I should be ok as far as fitment. Then i need to use whatever EGR fits the manifold. Fuel rail and injectors should be used from the 00 motor since it is a return-less system where the older model were not? Anything else to look out for?
