My trans went today maybe a selenoid or bands? OK I was backing out of my brothers driveway a little while ago, about 4 hrs ago.Moved about a foot or two and it popped really loud and jerked, then it started making a whinning noise. Sounds like maybe from the torque converter or the front of the trans. Any help or advice is appreicated.THANKS

do you have any gears if you move the selector to 1 or 2

No gears at all it feels like it engages, I can feel it catch but it doesn't move. it just makes that whinning sound. It has made the sound before one time only about 3 mths ago when it got stuck in 4lo but I just stopped turned engine off and restarted and everything was fine. But this time that didn't help,Ieven disconnected the battery for about 30 mins. but no help.

so you got no gears and you heard a snap? maybe just snapped a band. :(

you do have enough fluid in there right? cause not enough fluid will make it not move once in gear. doenst have enough pressure.

looks like you are prob gonna have to tear into the tranny to find out what went wrong.

is the o/d light flashing

Does it still lock the wheels in park? Previous incident sounds like transfer case going into neutral position then resetting into high.

Plenty of fluid,no O/D light flashing, still locks in park.As for transfer case, didn't think of that but could be why, if it sticks in neutral there wouldn't be any gears or movement.Could tapping on it with a hammer dislodge the gear? But then again there's not a 4x4 light coming on,and I didn't put in 4x4 until this had already happened.
thanks

If it locks in park then the transfer case is still transfering power. There is a neutral position between HI and LOW. If the shift motor gets confused, this will prevent the vehicle from moving.

Can you still move it if you put the transmission in neutraL? I am wondering if the chain snapped and it has jammed in the transfer case. I still have strong feeling that this is transfer case related or something is locking the drive train. Stall speed on TC should be about 2K. Have you noticed top tach speed?

OK I just returned from my brothers house.Drove the ex home,we towed it up the drive [his driveway has a steep down hill grade] with his blazer. Once on flat ground we tried it again, this time it would catch in 2nd only,no reverse,1st,or drive.I took it down the road started in 2nd then shifted into drive by hand and it went just fine,no slipping or anything.Until I stopped then it wouldn't go until I put it in 2nd,won't pull out in 1st or drive,no reverse, it still grinds in drive[but only when sitting still not when moving]1st and reverse. Now for a question: Does 1st and reverse share the same band, and if so would this keep it from pulling out in drive? And has anyone had the 1st and reverse band replaced and how much did it cost?I know that labor charges will drive up the price but I'm still recovering from getting my 1st ex totalled and crushing my heel[hit by a drunk],so I cant do the work myself but will be hiring it out.

sounds like you lost a band

Thats what I was thinking.i'm going to do aa search on it for prices.
THANKS EVETBODY FOR YOUR HELP IT IS APPRECIATED!!!!

yea low/reverse is on the same band. its the easiest one to replace. luckily. it sits there right at bottom corner of VB. facing down so not too bad to change.

good luck and keep us posted.

Can the band be replaced in the truck or does tranny have to come out?

If the low/reverse band is snapped, this is the hardest to replace. It is located in the very back of the transmission and everything has to come out first. The servo piston for this is located in the pan and easy to get at. It's seal can leak but this doesn't sound like that problem. It can be removed and you can push up on the band through the hole. Should get firm in less than 1/2 inch. This would verify the band problem. Sounds like you still have 2nd and third. You can join us rebuilders or pay about $1400.

my bad. opera is right. it is in the back. i got confused cause i was picturing me laying under car and got it backwards. LOL it is in the rear. you can rebuild it. buy a used or rebuilt tranny. shops gonna cost ~1400 like opera said.

i bought a used one and installed it. then we rebuilt my old one and it is now For sale.

Well as stated earlier I'm still recovering from the wreck, still on crutches. So I guess I'm farming out the work.Good news is that car lot I bought it from is willing to pay to fix it. {up to $1200}. I have to take it to transmission shop tomorrow.Every shop I talked to said it was probably the planetary, said that bands didn't grind when they broke that was from 7 different shops. But I never claimed to be a transmission mechanic. So I will have to get all the parts back,I mean just because I'm not paying for it doesn't mean i want them to overcharge or charge for work not performed.
ONCE AGAIN THANKS TO EVERYONE!!!!!!
