I'm looking at doing a 302 swap and have found a candidate 98 Explorer with all accy's. This system has PATS on it and I am not going to mess with all of that.

Will a 96 or 97 computer hook up to the sensors, etc on the 98 engine without any problems?

You will need the CKP (crank shaft position sensor) from a 96 or 97. You will also need the upper and lower intake with the internal egr. Other than that all the other sensor should work. I put a '99 302 into my '96 V8 and thats all I had to change (if I remember correctly. ) I'll check my notes and get back to you.

Another option would be to have Apten burn you a chip and have a PATS delete which I know he can do.

The crank sensor should be the same. The cam position sensor is the different one between the 97 and 98. You will also need to re-wire the harness due to some pinout differences. The A/C system in particular is different.

Are you sure Apten can disable the PATS? I have heard from several people and chip burners that PATS is not easily disabled. A friend with another V8 ranger swap actually added thePATS to his 98 Ranger to run a 1999 Explorer EECV.

oops. CKP = Camshaft sensor. Thats what I meant, but I guess I just got too excited.

I take it you're putting all this into a Jeep, right? So you'd be best off getting the motor harness and computer from a '96 or '97 and just use the '98 motor. He shouldn't have to mess with a harness then, right tmsoko?

I'm pretty sure that Brian was posting somewhere about disabling the PATS with a chip.

Here we go.

Yeah, if you get the engine harness, computer, and cam sensor off the same vehicle, you are good to go. Not too familiar with the early EGR system. The 1997 Explorer engine I used had the Gt40P heads and the external EGR. It also had the 97 engine harness. That may be the best bet. In 1998 some electrics were changed, then again in 1999. From 1999-2001, if I remember right, the harnesses are identical.
