Vaccuum.
Depending on how long you had the engine out, and if the lines were capped, you should consider replacing the accumluator (also called the dryer).

I believe it's best to vaccuum with the engine compartment warm since this helps to get any water present into vapor form.

The pump I use is rated for 25 microns but since a gauge that reads down that far is around $500.00 I just make sure I have new oil in the pump and let it run for an hour at a time at two or three diferent times before I add the refrigerent.

Good advice.

Here's the deal. I am an A/C idiot so you guys need to talk to me like I'm seven.

Here's what happened.

I pulled the motor out, it was out for 6 days, nothing was capped. Now is the A/C something I can do myself or should I leave it to the Pros? I think it will cost me $80 to take it to my Uncle's shop. But I'd rather do it myself if possible.

So what tools, weapons, etc will I need and how do I do it?? :D

Thanks!

You should replace the accumulator to start. You will need a vacuum pump and a gauge set. There is a thread on converting, which has some good info. If you can wait a few days I am going to post a complete charge with pictures on a job I revcebtly completed on an old VW bus. That might prove helpful to some.
