Haha, I didn't even see your post. I am wondering the same thing. I need a stronger tranny. Mine likes to eat Tourqe Converters. And its costing Ammco a lot of money! Thank god for warranties!

I know my 98 Sport has something other than A4LD... wondering about a 96 4WD EB... might need to replace the old one...

Is the A4LD the stock auto, 2wd trans with overdrive?

A4LD was pretty much all you would get in the stock 1st gen and early 2nd gen "X" - automatic that is... 2wd or 4wd... I'm just wondering if there were other choices available in 96.

I dont think there were, but i want a heavier duty trans than what i have now. A lot of the prerunner ranger guys run different tranny's but i don't know if they bold up to the explorer.

C4 or C5 would be your choice but that requires some modifications... flywheel for starters...

do you know of anyone who specializes in tranny swaps?

not in your neck of the woods, no.

the A4LD ceased to exist with the 94. 95 was variously called either the A4ld-E or the 4R55... by 96 it was called the 4R55... An electronically shifted A4LD.... basically. It CAN be strengthened... see "My A4LD Rebuild Diary" on here or BRAIN's thread on Frankentranny....
