So, here is what I got... 1996 Ford Exp Sport.

Parked it on a slight incline, which always makes it a little harder to shift out of park.

When I tried to shift, I got a lot of resistance, almost like the cable was binding, then no clicks but the lever moved, and somehow I was able to get it in D.

got it home, and of course, tried to shift it back into P and it's stuck in drive.

the tow truck driver was able to get it in park, moving the lever at that tranny

So my question is, Im guessing it binded and then broke - where can I get a replacement cable? local stores don't seem to have anything - also, can I use one off a 98? is it in two parts? you guys are awesome with diagrams.

Im glad it seems like the linkage to the tranny and not the tranny itself, since the lever at the tranny could be moved... is this a common failure point? - Thanks

You might want to look at the end of the cable, might not have damaged the whole thing and only the bushing/clip on the end which is the weakest link (pun intended). If the steering column end is okay then look at the tranny end connection. There are places that sell repair kits that just have the clip.

This "might" be the right cable (which engine/tranny do you have?). If it is right the price seems a little high and so you might take the part # and look around for a better deal or just get the clip as mentioned above:
