Hello,

I have recently acquired a 1996 Explorer XLT 4.0l 5-spd. w/143,000 mi. I bought it from my boss at work who bought it from a manager at work so I know it hasn't been abused, much. Besides the peeling paint, it's super straight and relatively clean. I bought it as a prospective vehicle for my daughter as we've just recently lost our 1:1 car to driver ratio. The manual trans is an issue with my wife so one of the two 5-spds we now have is going to have to be replaced eventually but this was too good of a deal to pass up even if it is temporary.

It drives very nicely for a 21 yr old truck but of course, it has some issues. I'm hoping most of them aren't too much of a hassle.

I decided to replace the bulbs in my instrument cluster. Some weren't lighting up at proof-out and one or two of the illumination lights were out too.

In the interest of getting it done and not having to worry about it again. I ordered some LED lights, only the warning lights. I forgot to order the backlight bulbs so I paid through the nose for them at Orielly's.

So, I got the cluster out and swapped out all the bulbs. Assuming (I know, stupid) that everything would be OK I put everything back together. Now some of the lights that weren't coming one are, some that were aren't, both backlight and warning light. I played around with the dimmer switch and it didn't seem to help.

Most notable issues: the 4WD low light doesn't come on anymore. The parking brake which didn't come on only came on once and dimly. The check engine is on dimly and the ABS light is dimly blinking.

I'm thinking I might not have plugged in one of the connectors in tightly. Before I pull it all apart and put it back together I'd thought I'd check to see if anyone had any advice.

You may need to clean the contacts on the circuit board where the bulbs plug into.

Not sure what caused the issue with the check engine light, etc. I would start by cleaning the contact points with some electronic parts cleaner https://www.amazon.com/CRC-05101-QD...9568&sr=8-2&keywords=electronic+parts+cleaner on a microfiber towel. If they really look bad you may want to scuff them lightly with a fine Scotch Brite pad https://www.amazon.com/Grey-Scuff-S...id=1493489679&sr=8-2&keywords=3m+scotch+brite

Thanks, I thought of that but everything looks very clean.

I was just out messing with it and that dawned on me LEDs are Light Emitting DIODES and therefore have polarity. I switched around the lights I knew weren't showing up. I got few more but I don't get some no matter the orientation.

I am correct in assuming ALL warning lights should illuminate when the key is rotated to RUN and/or START for a second or two, right?
