so i have a 96 Ford Explorer and it will only go forward and i will also drive forward when i put it in reverse. i have checked everything except the solenoid(and the torque convertor but i think the convertor dose not cause that ), and i think the problem might be there. i'm going to replace the solenoid that is broken and is there someone here that could point out the solenoid that might be broken or cause that the car only goes forward ?

What does the fluid look like? Smell burnt? When vehicle moves forward in reverse you have clutch packs burnt and stuck together. Solenoid will not help with this issue. Need to replace or rebuild transmission. Let us know how it works out for you.

the fluid is not burnt or bad, no metal in the oil like in a broken transmission. and the O/D light blinks and the check engine light too. but you think that its the clutch pack are burnt together

Get it scanned and see what codes. But something inside transmission is bad. What led up to this problem?

One thing that came to mind is IF when you select reverse and it will drive forward with NO bind up or resistance there is a chance that the manual valve has become disconnected from the linkage inside the pan, drop the pan to inspect the valve.

I have seen this before where the role pin is missing or the nut that holds the linkage together comes loose and the manual valve becomes disconnected. This would explain the clean fluid because like Brad said if the manual valve is ok then the problem will be a internal failure with something locked on.

well the transmission is from a donor car that i got the transmission from, i got the car from a friend and he told me the transmission was working when he parked the car, but the car was not moved for 2-3 years, i was hoping that i would not have to remove this transmission again. the new transmission i think it might be something that got stuck over that time or the torque convertor because i did not replace it when i replaced the transmission. but i will take the pan and check if there is something clearly not doing it what it should.
