- 1996 Explorer XLT
Background: 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L
Purchased this Explorer knowing it needed head gaskets and a transmission rebuild. Replaced the head gaskets than had the transmission rebuilt.
Well I retrieved my vehicle from the tranny shop and all was good except for a vacuum leak that I knew about prior (have to pull the lower intake manifold off again and reseal it). Drove it around sparingly for two to three weeks and then it shifted itself into 4WLo. Cleaned the transfer case motor to find it needed to be replaced. New part worked for about two weeks and dropped itself back into 4WLo. I tested the 4WD switch and it seems to be working properly but the relay clicks eight times when vehicle is started. Four out of the eight wires from the relay are reading 12 volts when my diagram shows only one wire should be hot at all times. When the relay clicks one wire (yellow) reads 12 and the other wire (orange) reads 0.3. It reads this only while it clicks than they both read 0.0. it surprisingly reads this at the relay and at the transfer case motor.
Any advice would be helpful. I have down time due to the rain that looks like it's here for a couple of days. Thanks.
