my parents has just purchased a 96 limited 4 dr and the child proof locks were activated. when i went to get out the vechicle the door wouln't open with the doors unlocked.
seems as if the handle is messed up. anyone have any tips on repairing . haven't had time to pull the door panels, just want a heads up before i do the surgery.

if the child safety lock is on then the door is fine and should not open even if it is unlock. if the child lock is off and it will not open from the inside you have a problem.

i have attempted to disable he childproof locks afterwards, but no no avail.
they will open from the outside ,but not from the inside.

My wife has the same problem with her 94 XLT and I looked in the door jamb and can't find a child safety lock to flip. Where is it at? Just the rear doors are like this and she doesn't have power door locks.

on the rear doors with pwr locks , open the door and look below the latch mechinisim , you should see a very small lever on the side . you have to flip it back and forth . but if you're in the same boat as they are its not going to matter.i tried to disengage the lock but the lever will move, but no disengage.
i don't want to go to the dealer (to expensive ) plus i need the pratice (love to tear things apart and put'em back together)on the doors . just thought someone would have had a idea on what to look for when i pull the panels off.

i have the same problem on my 96 limited. What happens is the latch mechanism has a plastic insert that controls the child safety lock. This little plastic insert, either busted or just gets knocked off track. You need to go to a ford dealership and get new latches. The dealership told me it was a common problem and they have them in stock. Also, you might want to check your door handles also b/c they also are made of plastic and the little teeth in them bust. I bought 2 new latches and handles for about $100 total. Hope this helps ya out.
