My '96 Explorer 4x4 4.0 SOHC has 118,000 miles and has been very trouble free up until last Wednesday. I drove it home from work and it had no problems. My daughter took it to go to a friend's house and only made it about 1 mile. She said the vehicle started shaking soon after she got out of our driveway and she ended up in another driveway and said it would not go. She said there was loud noise with pushing the gas trying to get it to go. I got in and the engine started up but when put into gear, nothing happened(the vehicle did come out of park but the transmission would not engage and push the vehicle forward or reverse even a small amount). I tried 1st gear, drive, reverse in 2wd and then 4wd high and even 4wd low but no go. The vehicle was towed to the Ford place for diagnoses and I'm still waiting to hear from the Transmission Specialist as he was busy already Thursday and Friday- should hear from the Ford place tomorrow. I did check and the tranny did still have its oil. I have owned the vehicle since new and have had the Ford dealer change the oil every 30,000 miles. Question: Has anyone had a similar experience and what was problem?? I am expecting the worse(complete tranny replacement) but understand it could possibly be shift linkage, hydraulic problem, or electronics. I will let all know the eventual fix.
