96 XLT pings

Hi there, I am new to this forum and a new explorer owner. I've driven Mustangs for most my life and just bought a 96 Explorer XLT with 26,000 miles on it. Its gorgeous and I love it... the only question I have is that when I shut it down, regardless of how long I have driven, it pings. It does this for about 5 minutes or so. The thing runs great, no problems at all, just this knocking. Is this normal? Any responses would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Kent

Is the engine continuing to run (dieseling), or is it just the exhaust system cooling down and the metal contracting (which is normal)?
