My 97 started vibrating like a U joint. When I inspected it, I found the transfer case rear bearing had a lot of play and had started leaking again. Rear seal was replaced about 6 months ago and when I bought it 35K ago it had only about a pint of nasty fluid in it. Also made funny noises till the fluid was replaced. Always was a noisy car to drive. I had attributed that to badly worn tires that were cupped. Just put in new ball joints.
Questions I have are:
1. is there a good place to get parts for this and a manual.
2. can I go quick and dirty by replacing just the rear bearing? Will this pull out from the back when the flange and seal are removed?
I didn't spend that much time looking at it when I replaced the seal. Figure it can't be any harder than rebuilding a transmission. Don't even know what the case number is but figure I will be getting an education. At 142K it could probably use a rebuild.
