I have a 97 Ford Ranger with a Borg-Warner 1354 transfer case. Recently it went out and I have been trying to find parts to fix it. The fork inside that shifts the case into 4hi and 4low broke. The ends broke off and it locked into 4 low. I have it out of the truck now and apart and visably there isnt any other damage. I was wondering if anyone knows if you can get this part. Many of the rebuild kits I have seen do not include this.

I have a transfer case out of a 98 but the output shaft to the front axle are different and the front driveshafts and not the same. Does anyone know if I could take the 2 cases and make 1 good one? The 98 has a lot of differences when compared to the 97 but the internal parts are the same.

Is your 97 case a manual shift case? If so, that would account for the differences. The 98 case is electric shift.

I am 99 1/2% sure the shift fork is the same in both cases. Given that, you should be able to take the similar part from the 98 case and put it in the 97 case.

The 97 case is electronic shift. So is the 98. Right now I have the 98 case in my Ranger, after changing a few things. I just don't have 4 wheel drive with it. The 98 case uses a CV joint on the front shaft and the 97 don't. Ive tried to use a 98 front driveshaft, but when the front end bounces it pulls the CV joint apart. Thats why I want to rebuild the 97 case.

If you want to use the 98 case, I'm pretty sure you can pull the front output shaft from the 97 and replace it in the 98 case.

I am planning on doing just the opposite when I replace the electric shift case in my '06 with a manual shift case.

Thanks for the advice. I think Ill try it. Sounds like it will work. I appreciate the help.
