My brother has a 97 dodge datota. when he gives it gas the blower fan cuts out. It doesn't only do it when the throttle is wide open either. It blows less and less air depending on how much he puts his foot in it. If it helps he first noticed the problem a while after installing a new water pump. Any thoughts?
Assuming that the Dakota has vacuum operated HVAC servos (very likely), then this is a classic case of vacuum loss to the door controls when the engine vacuum approaches zero on acceleration. Usually, the zero-vacuum default is to the defroster registers, so the flow from the panel vents decreases and that appears to be the blower slowing down.
First step should be a visual check of the vacuum line from the engine to the vacuum reservoir and from the reservoir to the HVAC. It may be cut or improperly seated.
Then verify the flow path through the check valve. It should allow easy airflow toward the intake manifold but have high resistance to airflow away from it.
