97 explorer (2 door) new to the forum

Hey everyone im new to the forum just looking around for some information on my explorer. my explorer makes a banging and a grinding sound when im driving or slowing down, but only when the truck is warm. sounded like something in the transfer case, but i took it apart the other day and everything seems to be a ok. could it possibly be the front or rear diffs? someone lead me in the right direction please haha thanks

Welcome to this forum! Some parts such as the shift fork could develop a hair line crack, and it might not be noticeable. Double check each internal part in the transfer case while it's apart.

so even the smallest crack can cause such a loud noise?

A cracked part will have a certain amount of movement until it finally gives out, and breaks completely.

i went threw the whole transfer case looking for broken parts but nothing. put new trans fluid in it and repaired a wire that looked damaged and everything is running good now.
