Im thinking of purchasing a 97' Explorer AWD V8 wit 106k on it? My first experience with my 94' Explorer V6 sucks tranny is terrible and all it has been is a headache. I asked this cause when i bought this it also had 106k on it. Is there anyway i can check to see if this has been taken care of? Are the trannies on the V8's any better? Do I need to take this to a *ford dealership* to get a checkover? Last time i took mine to a local auto mechanic? The body and interior looked really nice and the engine is really clean. It rides fine no slipping or engine knocking. I just dont want to get screwed over again since college is starting up in August for me and I need a reliable vehicle and i would like it to be an Explorer since this site is really great. BTW he is asking $6500

That price seems reasonable for the truck. The V8 tranny will run circles around the V6 trannys, its soo much better, and is basically an AOD tranny (same one the 'stangs use)

Good deal

That sounds like a good deal to me. I had a 94 EB and now I have a 97 5.0 AWB EB. It's like night and day, the differences in teh engine/tranny. The new 5.0 and new trannys are great! You jsut want to make sure that you change the tranny fluid, engine oil, etc and check that it was taken care of in it's past too. Any past receipts, records?

You should be able to take it to a local mechanic that you know or most any shop that will go over a few point son the X for an inspection / check over, ball joints, undercarraige, engine, etc. But if it feels good driving, then most likely the Explorer is good!

Good luck! :)

do a search for tranny failure related threads. you will find 99.9% of them are for the various V6 trannies, and 0.1% of them are for the 4R70W in V8. :D

I just got done talking to him today and he said he can go down to $5800. That thing is loaded power sunroof, leather, trip computer,6 disc cd changer, keyless entry. Its really nice. I drove it again today and the transmission shifts really really good. Nice power difference from the v6. The check engine light came on so I had it scanned at autozone. It was the right side o2 sensor in front of the cattylic (sp) convertor. I know thats $60 how much would it cost to have someone put in labor really? I dont like the mechanics around here they are all redneck morons. Will the ford dealership do a check down on it for me? BTW it is a 2 owner vehicle most recenty it was traded in for a new GMC envoy. The owner lived in bentonville, Ark. and well around here that is where alot of nice homes and "wealthier people live" thanks for the help

Thanks

Got it today I will have pics of it up soon. Most of you know what a stock Exploder looks like. Im going to hold off a bit on modding it up but trust me it will be coming soon.l
