97 ranger xlt super cab
My ranger has been emitting some strange sounds lately. At first I thought it was wheel bearings because it sounded like I had new snow tires on. But the the noise started changing to a growling type noise. It happens when I'm accelerating and coasting in neutral. My truck is a 4 cyl, 4 speed extended cab. In the past 6 years I have changed 3 carrier bearings and had the rear rebuilt once about 5 years ago as part of the carrier bearing diagnostic. The truck was never used to haul heavy stuff. The only thing I ever towed was an old camper trailer-once. Dealer says the ring and pinion may be bad as well as the carrier bearing again. The reason he says? Salt air. ( I live a half mile from the beach in NJ) Anyone have any ideas as to my problem and /or why it's happening?

I'd find another mechanic to bring it to, that dealer does not know what's wrong. Is he the same one that did the other fixes?

No. A local mechanic replaced the carrier bearings and did the rebuild.
