I posted a while back about this, and well, I just went out and bought a truck, but with gas prices, I am trying to resurrect my 97 4x4 SOHC.

At first I thought there was an issue only when on snow, but as I kept driving the explorer, even on pavement, periodically the explorer would just start making all types of screeching noises and I couldn't accelerate. I don't recall it as being very clunky but just crazy loud screeching. Maybe when a trans grinds it doesn't vibrate much I don't know, but I figured i would have really felt something like that. I don't recall feeling any vibrations, just the noise. I think I compared it to a belt squeal from hell. (this has been quite some time so it's hard to remember).

When this happened, I could shift into neutral, and then back into drive, and then it would drive for however long, then would happen again. It got worse and worse until now I can barely go very far at all until it makes this noise, It is extremely loud.

I am assuming it is the transmission and it needs a rebuild. Somebody mentioned transfer case because it happened to me at first in the snow, but I cant believe it is the transfer case, if it is happening simply while driving on pavement.

Any sure way of making sure it just needs a rebuild before I spend time and money replacing the trans?

Thanks in advance!
