I own a 97 xlt with a 5 spd manual trans. I have not been able to drive my truck for 3 months now because of the tranny trouble i am having. It runs through the gears perfectly when accelerating but on the downshift or coasting downhill in gear it jumps out of gear (the shifter actually stays in gear but the tranny does not) and it grinds terribly. The tranny and transfer case have been out several times but everything looks like new. The clutch, pressure plate, and bearing were all replaced 25000 kms ago and look great. My tranny tech. (20 years experience) has given up. I have spoken with Ford Canada and the Tech Service line to Dearborn and everything they say checks out fine. What can I do? ANY IDEAS WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!

Have they been inside the tranny? It sounds to me like the sincronizing rings (sincros) are bad. Does it do it in every gear? From your description it sounds like the problen is going to be inside the transmission, not the clutch.

yes they have had it apart 3 times all syncros were replaced but weren't really damaged. He replaced them just because he was inside he figured for the $125.00 it was worth a try. As well there was no damage at all to any gears or anything. My tech told me he would sell it as a rebuilt unit there is just nothing wrong. And yes it does it in every gear (except 1rst, have to be stopped to put it in first of course)

Transmissions always seem to be a big trouble spot. And they are always hell to repair.
