Does anyone know the 3.0L engine well enough to tell me whether these engines are known to knock after a while? At first I thought it was lifter noise, but it sure sounds like piston slap. My 98 B-3000 with 160k miles has been wonderful when all of a sudden it developed a knock. I assumed it was a lifter becasue the knock frequency seemed to be 1/6 of the RPM frequency. It's a metallic sound which comes from the very front of the engine. I have to find my stethoscope to pin point the area. I removed the accessory drivebelt in the hope that it was something other than the engine, but it still knocks even without the belt spinning anything.
If it's the engine, is it worth fixing or should I but a replacement engine? The engine also needs a waterpump and I know what kind of nightmare that could turn into. Any advice?
