Searching the net for an answer on ranger tach stuck around 3000 rpm. Found this thread and read through when I came across this post...

This is a great post. I have had many trained mechanics attempt to fix my tach problem for years and all failed, usually claiming bad sensors or wiring. I followed the above thread and now mt "92 EB is running great. Fixing the tach and getting the correct rpm reading also stopped all problems with labor knock due to preinigition. The whole job tokk less than one hour.

Is it possible that a tach being out will get a knock /miss in engine? fixing and working on a 92 4x4 ranger. 4l, auto. been driving and working on these trucks since 1991. great trucks. the one just bought cheap to fix up and have as a winter truck has a miss on drivers side that is being looked into. there was a small intake leak under the air intake after took it off to check the injectors. the fuel rail screws were loosened. still has knock / miss.
