Thermostat

The thermostat looks like this.

That disk on the bottom is the heater bypass that Dale was referring to.
I would use a 195°f.

What would be an alarming rate?
depending on the model, style of driving and the terrain in your area 16-18mpg may be the most you will get.

In my smaller Sport I get 19-21mpg if I drive mildly on falt roads and highway
but in the hills around my house and driving fast it drops to 14-16 in a heartbeat. From what I have seen in heavy city driving most get 14-16 with the 4.0 Explorer .

On a unrelated note I love all the cool vehicles you guys have in AU ,
the Falcons, Clubsports, Monaros, UTEs , etc.

My last car was a Holden (sold as Pontiac here ) GTO with the correct AU HSV front end and badging.
The big two car fight over here is what you have a holden (pontiac) and the Ford they basically have the market share with Toyota behind them followed by everyone else,in the 4x4 market its the Toyota land cruiser, then the Nissan patrol and then a host of other brands and models,at the moment Jeep are having a big push at the market, there relatively cheap for a 4x4 when you look at a landcruiser new is now over$75.000,we dont get the choice of the new explorer the latest ones we saw was 06,so my next move in the 4x4 market could be Jeep, hopefully when i change plugs and leads i will get some better fuel economy out of the ex plus i must get the new thermostat done, cheers.

Just to give you a laugh,i got aprice from my local ford stealer for a thermostat for the 98 ex $219.98 thats right for a piece of shrapnel the size of an apple, the lady apologised and said "its not me setting the prices" and laughed, have a great xmas cheers.

My brother has a 2005 HiLux with a the 3 litre diesel. It was a little spendy (not near as bad as a new V8 land cruiser or a nissan) but it is such a tough 4wd.

If you want to wait til May, ill bring one from here, and you can pay me when you get it from me.

Thanks for the offer i will let you know, not sure if im going to keep the work vehicle,if i lose it the ex will get a lot more work to do,cheers.

As a further post ,just removed the thermostat, its the original motorcraft one, that makes it nearly 12 years old,is that vintage, maybe i could sell it on ebay and make a fortune, surprisingly it still works but just opens very early ,new one goes in t-morrow ,fingers crossed the ex is a bit more economical with a more consistent temperature.cheers.

All done, thermostat in,temp now goes to just below half way and sits there constantly,my opinion is that the sohc is maybe harder to replace because of room to move issues but because the thermostat sits flat instead of perpendicular there isnt as much of a problem getting air out of the system, the coolant doesnt run out because of the way the thermostat sits so all you do is refill the radiator from what little came out when you removed the hose and thermostat and circulate the coolant and top up,system pressurised and ready to go,now to see any gains in kms/per litre, cheers to all and a safe and happy xmas.
